Las Vegas, New Mexico - Regis Rangers swept a high-scoring doubleheader from New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Saturday at Brandt Field, taking Game 1, 13-4, and holding off a late rally in Game 2 for a 9-8 victory.
Prior to first pitch, New Mexico Highlands honored its 11 seniors as part of Senior Day presented by Quality Care.
With the sweep, Regis improves to 17-27-1 overall and 8-18-1 in RMAC play, while New Mexico Highlands falls to 10-35 overall and 5-22 in the conference.
Game 1: Regis 13, New Mexico Highlands 4
Regis wasted no time taking control, erupting for five runs in the opening inning behind four extra-base hits. The early surge gave the Rangers a lead they would not relinquish.
The Rangers added a run in the third and two more in the fifth stretching the lead to 8-1.
New Mexico Highlands showed life in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on RBI plays from
Jeremiah D'Arezzo,
Johnathan Davis, and
Ryan Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 8-4. However, Regis responded with a five-run seventh inning, capitalizing on timely hitting to put the game out of reach.
Lubby Marrujo paced New Mexico Highlands with three hits.
Game 2: Regis 9, New Mexico Highlands 8
Game two turned into a back-and-forth battle, with New Mexico Highlands appearing poised to earn a split after building an 8-4 lead through six innings.
The Cowboys broke through with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from
Seth Galfano,
Tamden Webb-Tate, and
Taiga Sato. They followed with three more runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to take control.
Regis responded in the seventh inning with a decisive four-run rally. An RBI walk, followed by a two-run single from Mason Grube, tied the game at 8-8.
The Rangers completed the comeback in the ninth inning with an RBI single to take a 9-8 lead.
New Mexico Highlands had multiple players recording multi-hit performances, including
Adrian Castenada, Marrujo,
Johnathan Davis, Rodriguez, and Galfano.
New Mexico Highlands and Regis conclude the series on Sunday at 12:00 pm at Brandt Field.
