Cowboys Extend Settembre to Build on RMAC Breakthrough

Las Vegas, N.M. - Coming off New Mexico Highlands' first winning season in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play since 2019-20, Cowboys men's basketball head coach Zach Settembre has agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2028-29 season, Director of Athletics Scott Noble announced today.

"Excellence Through Athletics is a pillar of our Destination Highlands vision," said NMHU President Dr. Neil Woolf. "Athletics are a visible expression of Highland pride and unity, and strong programs strengthen recruitment, retention, and alumni engagement across the university. Coach Settembre understands that responsibility and has approached it with the kind of steady, values-driven leadership we want defining Highlands athletics. Extending his tenure is a deliberate investment in where this program, and this university, are headed."

Settembre guided the Cowboys to an 11-9 RMAC record in 2025-26. The team led the conference in field-goal percentage at 51.3% and set a program record with a 53-point conference win over Western Colorado, 113-60. Guard Marcus Pierce earned All-RMAC Second Team honors.

The program continues to emphasize efficient shot selection, defensive intensity, and player development under Settembre. Eight members of the program are set to graduate this spring, a single-season program record, and another player has signed to compete at the Division I level next year.

"I'm grateful for the continued belief and support of President Woolf, our AD Scott Noble, Dr. Grindstaff, and our Board of Regents," Settembre said. "New Mexico Highlands is a special place because of its people, and our young men have embraced the challenge of competing in the RMAC. We're building something that lasts, and we're motivated to bring a championship home to Las Vegas."
