Cowgirls Pound Defending Two Time RMAC Tourney Champs

#15 Briana Gholston
The John A. Wilson Complex was full of excitement as Tuesday night was a huge night for the Cowgirls basketball team. The Cowgirls hosted the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, who have won the RMAC Tournament for the past two years. The Cowgirls also had their Senior Night, as their seniors played in their last home game of the year, and Shootin' for the Cure for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Cowgirls rolled over the ThunderWolves in a convincing fashion as they won 62-49.

Head Coach Tiffany Darling said, “ This has to be one of the biggest wins in recent history, to knock of the back- to- back RMAC Tournament Champions pretty handily, proves that this program is moving in the right direction.”

The Cowgirls took out to an early lead from a Jessica Armijo two point shot and never looked back as they were up by as much as 22 points during the game The Cowgirls had three girls in double digits for scoring en route to their victory.

The Cowgirls were led by seniors Armijo and Amanda Beauchamp in scoring as they each had 13 points in their final home game. Both Armijo and Beauchamp were 100% from the free throw line. Katlyn Mary also scored 10 points for the Cowgirls.

Briana Gholston led the Cowgirls' defense as she grabbed nine rebounds on the night and added in eight points. Beauchamp had seven rebounds for the night and Whitney Polosky had six rebounds.

Pink Night 2010 Survivors

The Cowgirls hosted four ladies from the Las Vegas area who are Breast Cancer Survivors. The survivors were able to sit behind the bench for the whole game, were recognized by the Cowgirls during halftime and were then treated to a post game reception with the team. The Cowgirls helped raise over $1,500 for the Kay Yow Foundation. Kay Yow was a famed NC State women's basketball coach who battle breast cancer three times and passed away from her third bout.

Another treat for the Cowgirls was that they honored their seniors in their final home game. Armijo and Ashley Logan have played for the Cowgirls for three years while Beauchamp has played for two years. Darling said, “I couldn't be more proud of this group of young women. I am so happy for our three seniors for leading this program to such a monumental win on the last night they will ever wear their home uniforms in front of their home crowd. These three young women have committed daily to turning this program around and have endured some trials and tribulations along the way; they have never given up or stopped believing in me or the vision for this program. I thank them for letting me be a part of their lives and for making me a better coach and person just for having known them.”

The Cowgirls are now 10-13 overall and 5-11 in RMAC play. They will take on the Western New Mexico University Mustangs on 2/ 18 in Silver City.
