The NMHU Cowgirl basketball team found themselves a new name today, the Comeback Kids. The Cowgirls faced off against the Mavericks of Mesa State College and were behind by 12 points in the first half but took the lead and never looked back as they defeated the Mavericks 62-55. The last time the tow teams met up, the Cowgirls lost by two, so they took this win in style.
The Cowgirls had the lead going into halftime and kept it as the game continued. Four Cowgirls scored in double digits yet again. Whitney Polosky led the Cowgirls to victory with 14 points on the night. She also added in four rebounds, three assists and two steals Ashley Logan, playing in her last game as a Cowgirl, tallied 13 points and four rebounds for the Cowgirls.
Rounding out the double digit scoring for the Cowgirls were their other two seniors playing in their last game as Cowgirls, Jessica Armijo and Amanda Beauchamp. Armijo scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds, had four assists and four steals on the night. Beauchamp had 11 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists and steals.
The Cowgirls defense efforts were lead by Briana Gholston with 10 rebounds on the night.
In terms of overall RMAC stats, the Cowgirls finished 4th in the category of steals, averaging 9.4 steals per game with a total of 234 steals on the year. Armijo finished with 274 points on the season leading the Cowgirls and breaking through the top 25 scorers in the RMAC Logan was close behind, ranked 26th in the RMAC with 260 points for the season. Gholston is ranked 25th for rebounding with 128 total rebounds, as Logan was close behind in a three way tie for 28th place with 125 total rebounds on the season. First year Cowgirl Whitney Polosky had a free throw percentage of .711 ranking her 22nd in the fierce RMAC with Armijo shooting .699 ranking her 26th and Gholston at .681bringing in the Cowgirls at 29th. The highest ranking for the Cowgirls came from Armijo with a 5th place ranking for steals, coming in at 52 steals on the year.
The Cowgirls finished their season but saw many memorable moments throughout the year starting with a victory over Division I Northern Arizona University. The Cowgirls played through adversity as they had roster changes, but overcame that when they defeated two time RMAC Tournament Champions CSU-Pueblo as they helped raise over $1,800 for the Kay Yow Foundation. The Cowgirls finish with an overall record of 11-15, the best record in years for the program, and 6-13 in RMAC play.
