Mavericks Stampede Past Cowboys 40-6

The NMHU Cowboys fell to RMAC foe, Mesa State College, on 9/25 by a final score of 40-6 in Grand Junction, Colo. The Cowboys fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will come back to the friendly confines of Perkins Stadium this week as they gear up for their 2010 Homecoming opponent, the Mountaineers of Western State College.

The Cowboys struggled offensively as they were held to 43 yards rushing and 256 yards passing for the day for a total offensive production of 299 for the game. The Mavericks would hold the Cowboy offense scoreless as the Cowboys lone score came off of a 75 yard interception return for a touchdown by Cowboy defensive back Kenny Shanahan. The point after try was missed by kicker Ernesto Guerra. The Cowboys would turn the ball over five times throughout the game as they would lose one fumble and throw four interceptions. Three of the five turnovers would lead to scores by the Mavericks.

Brandon Torres would account for most of the rushing yards by the Cowboys as Torres had 11 carries for 49 yards on the day with a long run of 15 yards. Robbie Armijo and Jordan Mendoza would share most of the reps at quarterback for the Cowboys. Armijo would finish the day completing eight of 21 passes for 123 yards and throw two interceptions. Mendoza would have similar numbers as he completed six of 19 passes for 133 yards and throw two interceptions.

Defensively, the Cowboys would finish the day allowing the Mavericks to gain 161 yards on the ground and 247 in the air for 408 yards of total offense. The Cowboy defense would cause the Mavericks to fumble the ball three time, but would only recover one of the three fumbles. The Cowboys lone interception on defense would result in a score as Kenny Shanahan would pick off a Mesa State pass and run it back 75 yards for the score.

Defensive leaders for the Cowboys include: Kenny Shanahan and Tony Udley. Shanahan finished the day with five tackes and one interception for a touchdown. Udley would finish with 7 tackles, one for a loss of four yards, one fumble recovery and one pass break-up on the day.

The Cowboys will have a short time to regroup as they set their minds on Western State College. The Cowboys will play host to the Mountaineers on 10/2 for NMHU's Homecoming game.
