Cowgirls Edged Out by Lopers

The NMHU Cowgirls lost a close RMAC home game to University of Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 72-68. The Cowgirls couldn't hold on in a tight contest that saw seven lead changes in the first half but only one change in the second half that left the ladies without the win. With their loss to the Lopers the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, drop to a 3-9 record in the RMAC and 6-12 overall in overall play.

Freshman Guard Alyssa Lopez was the Cowgirls' leading scorer on the night with 17 points. Lopez made 7-15 shots from the field including 3-5 from beyond three point range. She would also add three rebounds, one block and one assist in 27 minutes on the court. Cowgirls' Senior Briana Gholston had a solid night scoring 12 points and was the team's leading rebounder nabbing seven. The senior Forward came off the bench to play 22 minutes. Freshman China Smith rounded out the top scorers with 11 points in a solid 21 minutes of playing time adding three steals and three towering blocks. Freshmen Lopez and Smith both started on a night that saw some valuable minutes played by some of the newer talent on Coach Darling's team. Alyssa Lopez has quickly developed into a scoring threat for the Cowgirls'.

The Cowgirls couldn't survive in a closely battled game against an experienced Nebraska-Kearney team that had won the previous night at WNMU. Tonight's win puts the Lopers in a tie for 4th place on a three game winning streak. They were aided in their efforts on the night by Senior Megan Becker who added her 5th double-double of the season. The Cowgirls led at the half by five points and continued to control the game until the Lopers were able to regain the lead nine and a half minutes into the second half. The Cowgirls played a tough game against a tough Nebraska-Kearney team falling by four points but gaining valuable experience and showing chemistry from a talented young lineup.

The NMHU women's basketball team will be in action again 1/18 as they travel to Denver, Colorado to face Johnson and Wales Univ. in a non-conference road game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
