Cowgirls Storm Past Thunderwolves 60-52

The NMHU Cowgirls earned a decisive victory tonight in a road game against CSU-Pueblo 60-52. The Cowgirls led by as many as 12 points in a game that saw Cowgirl China Smith secure her fourth double-double of the season. With their win over the Thunderwolves the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improve their record in the RMAC to 5-9 and 9-12 in overall play.

China Smith had an impressive game against CSU-Pueblo in her 30 minutes on the court. She scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds en route to another double-double performance. Smith shot 50% on the night, netting 9 of her 18 field goal attempts while adding three blocks and three steals to lead the Cowgirls assault. Cowgirl stalwarts Whitley Coca and Briana Gholston each added 10 points to the team's effort. Coca played 38 minutes in the game during which she had 10 points, six assists and four rebounds. Gholston had 10 points, six steals and five rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time before she fouled out in the final minutes of the game.

The Cowgirls started the game strong gaining an eight point lead seven minutes into the first half. CSU-Pueblo fought back to go up by two with 4:41 remaining in the half. The teams battled to a 29-29 tie going into the locker room.

The game continued to be close in the second half with three lead changes after the break. The Cowgirls secured the lead in the first five minutes of the second half and would not look back. The team increased the lead to 12 with only 3 minutes and 42 seconds remaining on a layup by China Smith. The Thunderwolves tried to close the gap but could come no closer than five points thanks to key free throw shooting by the Cowgirls in the closing minutes of the game.

The NMHU women's basketball team will continue conference action tomorrow 1/29 in an RMAC road contest against UC-Colorado Springs. The Cowgirls will visit the Gallogly Events Center in Colorado Springs to play a Cougar team that has a 6-8 RMAC record and is 7-11 in overall play this season.
