Turnovers Prove Costly for Cowboys in 42-14 Loss to Chadron State

#26 Kyle Legere
Turnovers proved to be costly for the Cowboys on 10/15 as they fell to the Eagles of Chadron State College 42-14 in Chadron, Neb. The Cowboys turned the ball over eight times throughout the game and the Eagles would capitalize as they scored 31 points off of the NMHU turnovers. All of the Cowboys turnovers came in the first half of play which led to a 37-0 halftime score. Coming out of the halftime break the Cowboys played like a different team from their first half performance as they held the Eagles to five total points in the second half and would score 14 points of their own. The Cowboy defense was responsible for seven of those points as Virdell Larkins scooped up a Chadron State fumble and took it to the house on a 28 yards fumble return for the Cowboys first points of the day. Clint Barnard and Kevon Williams would connect in the final minutes of the game on a 20 yard Barnard touchdown pass to Williams for the Cowboys second and final score of the day. Even after the second half turnaround, the Cowboys costly turnovers in the first half proved to be too much as the Eagles would come away with the win 42-14. With the loss, the Cowboys are now 4-3 overall and 2-3 in RMAC play.

“In a situation like we're facing, with no true quarterback, other positions have to step up. Clint (Barnard) did what he could in tough situations but you can't overcome that many turnovers. The defense played well today. Our turnovers put them in some bad situations and they responded the best they could. We have to clean some things up this week to prepare for UNK,” said NMHU Head Coach Eric Young after his Cowboys 42-14 loss to Chadron State College on 10/15.

Offensively, the Cowboys finished the day with 206 total yards (140 rushing and 66 passing). Jordan Campbell led the Cowboys in rushing with 60 yards for the game. Clint Barnard would step out from his linebacker duties and into the quarterback role for the Cowboys this game due to some costly injuries to the Cowboys quarterback stable and complete seven of 18 pass attempts for 66 yards and one touchdown. Barnard also finished third in rushing for the Cowboys with 42 yards on the day. Kevon Williams led the Cowboys in receiving with three catches for 32 yards and one touchdown.

The Cowboy defense played a great game as they held the Eagles to 283 total yards on the day (114 rushing and 169 passing). The Cowboys held the Eagles to their lowest offensive yardage of the season as they have averaged 363 yards per game. The Cowboys would force two Chadron State fumbles on the day and recover four fumbles throughout the game. Kyle Legere, Jordan Campbell and Tony Udley would lead the way for the Cowboys defensively. Legere finished with 10 tackles, one tackle for loss, force one fumble and break-up two CSC passes for the game. Campbell would add nine tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass break-up to his already impressive offensive stats during the game to be a true dual threat for the Cowboys. Tony Udley rounds out the top three with nine tackles and one fumble recovery with a return of 13 yards.

The Cowboys will return back to Perkins Stadium to face the #10 Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney on 10/22 in Las Vegas, N.M. at 12:00 p.m. The NMHU vs. UNK game will also be Military Appreciation Day at NMHU sponsored by the New Mexico National Guard.
