The NMHU Cowgirls Basketball team lost a thrilling overtime exhibition game, 81-75, to the NMSU Aggies, on 10/31, in Las Cruces, N.M. The Cowgirls showed great promise throughout the game, letting the Aggies know they had come to play. The Cowgirls held the Aggies to 28% shooting from the field in the first half. The Cowgirls led by as much as nine points in the half and took a 31-30 lead into halftime. The Cowgirls kept the pressure on the Aggies, holding a 55-50 lead at one point in the second half. The Aggies were able to mount a comeback, and when the final buzzer sounded the end of regulation time, the score was tied at 67-67. The Aggies carried their momentum into the overtime period, shooting 80% from the field and 100% from the free throw line. The Cowgirls had three of their starting players foul out and the Aggies were too strong in the overtime period, leading by as many as nine points in OT. When the final buzzer sounded, the Aggies had triumphed on their home court by the final score of 81-75. The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, did a spectacular job of threatening the NCAA DI NMSU Aggies through two halves of play, and it took an overtime period for the Aggies to overcome the Cowgirls.
Whitley Coca was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls with 18 points in her 31 minutes on the court. Coca shot 6-12 from the field, 3-7 from the free throw line, and made three of her five three point shots. The Cowgirls' star point guard also finished with two assists and four rebounds before fouling out of the game.
Alyssa Lopez finished the night with 16 points for the Cowgirls. She played 25 minutes in the game, shooting 5-10 from the field, 3-4 from the charity stripe, and 3-5 from three point range.
The Cowgirls also got some nice production from their bench.
Ashley Godfrey scored nine points, with three rebounds, and four steals in her 32 minutes on the court. Freshman guard Jenine Coriz scored eight points in 17 minutes of playing time, and freshman post
Brittany Neeley led the Cowgirls with seven rebounds in her 14 minutes on the court.
The Cowgirls have shown great promise in the two exhibition games they have played in this pre-season. The Cowgirls dominated the University of the Southwest, beating the Mustangs in their first exhibition game 134-63. The Cowgirls followed up that impressive performance with what may be an even better showing by taking the Aggies of New Mexico State University into an overtime thriller before losing the game 81-75. The Cowgirls last exhibition game will be against the UNM Lobos, before they begin the regular season at home, on 11/12, against Northern New Mexico College.
The NMHU women's basketball team will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., on 11/5, to play their next exhibition game against the NCAA DI University of New Mexico. The Cowgirls will visit the Pit to take on a Lobos team that is slated to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference pre-season poll. The game is scheduled for a 2 pm start time.
