ThunderWolves Best Cowgirls 67-54

Box Score The NMHU Women's basketball team dropped the last game of their Colorado road trip, 67-54, to the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo.  The Thunderwolves took control of the game early with a 7-0 run in the first three minutes.  The Cowgirls closed to within three points with 14:03 left in the first half.  CSU-Pueblo quickly regained their composure, leading by as many as 18 points in the first half of play, and took a 30-15 lead into halftime.  The Thunderwolves came out of the locker room looking to control the game and led by as much as 21 points in the second half.  The Cowgirls fought their way back into the game but were only able to close to within 12 points.  When the final buzzer sounded CSU-Pueblo had secured the victory by the final score of 67-54.    With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 1-5 record in the RMAC and 5-5 in overall play.

Alyssa Lopez regained her top form in the game by tying for the game scoring lead at 22 points.  Lopez shot 7-18 from the field, 4-10 from behind the three-point line, and sank four of her five free-throw attempts.  She would add four rebounds, one assist, and a steal in her 31 minutes on the court.

Whitley Coca was the Cowgirls' second leading scorer in the game with nine points.  Coca played a good all-around game adding eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 33 minutes of playing time. 

Newcomers Ashley Zaragoza and Tanee' Denson-Griffin both contributed to the Cowgirls' efforts in the game.  Ashley Zaragoza once again led the Cowgirls in rebounds with nine.  Zaragoza also added a block and a steal in her 18 minutes on the court.  Tanee' Denson-Griffin was third in scoring for the Cowgirls with eight points.  Denson-Griffin played well in her 29 minutes in the game, adding seven rebounds and four steals to her night's totals.   

The Cowgirls struggled with their shooting in the game, hitting only 29% of their field goals on the night.  Both teams turned the ball over 20 times, but the Thunderwolves were able to capitalize by scoring 27 points off of the Cowgirls' turnovers, while the Cowgirls only managed 10 points off of CSU-Pueblo's errors.  The Cowgirls out-rebounded the Thunderwolves 44-42, and had 14 steals to CSU-Pueblo's eight.   

The Cowgirls will continue conference action again, on 12/30, as they host the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines.  The Orediggers are currently ranked ninth in the RMAC with a 1-3 conference record and 2-8 in overall play.  The game at the John A. Wilson Complex is scheduled for a 5 pm tip-off time, with the Cowboys taking to the court shortly after the completion of the women's game.  If you can't make it up to the gym to watch your Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to watch the game LIVE on the America One network.
