Cowgirls Fall to #3 Metro State

#23 Jenine Coriz
Box Score The NMHU Cowgirls Basketball team lost their first game of the season, 86-48, on the road at NCAA DII third ranked Metro State College.  The game was the Cowgirls' first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season and it was a tough draw having to play the #3 team in the nation on their home court.  The Cowgirls were able to stay with the Roadrunners for most of the first half, keeping the score within five points with 7:38 left in the half.  The Roadrunners started to pull away at that point but the Cowgirls were able to cut the lead to eight points with 3:50 left in the half.  Metro State took control of the game at that point and went into the locker room with a 19 point lead.  The Roadrunners came out focused for the second half and the Cowgirls were never able to get back into the game.  When the final buzzer sounded it was the Roadrunners that showed why they are one of the top ranked teams in the nation with the 38 point victory.  With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, start out the RMAC season with a 0-1 conference record while falling to 3-1 in overall play.

Metro State got solid production from their entire team with four players scoring in double figures.  The Roadrunners took advantage of the Cowgirls' 24% field goal percentage, while shooting 55% from the field and 50% from behind the three-point line themselves.

Alyssa Lopez led the Cowgirls' scorers in the game.  Lopez scored 15 points thanks to making nine of her 12 free throw attempts.  She also added six rebounds to her night's totals.

The Cowgirls' next highest scorers were Debbie Chavez and Eboni Jacobs.  Chavez scored eight points in the game, while Jacobs contributed seven points to the effort.  Both players have been adding some good production off the bench for the Cowgirls this season.

Trish Simpson led the Cowgirls in rebounds in the game with seven, while China Smith followed close behind with six rebounds.

The Cowgirls will be in action again, on 12/3, on the road in Denver, Colo., as they take on the Rangers of Regis University.  The Ranger have a 2-4 overall record and were picked to finish 10th in the RMAC this season.  The game is scheduled for a 7 pm tip-off time.
