Cowgirls Sweep OPSU Aggies

The NMHU Cowgirls swept their non conference double header against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Cowgirls won the first game 10-2 in five innings behind the pitching of Ashley Paiz. The Cowgirls the turned around and won the second game 4-2 on the strength of pitcher Melissa Martinez' seven complete innings of work. With the two wins over the Aggies the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve their record to 3-4 on the season.

In the first game of the double header the Cowgirls hit .370 as a team to rack up their 10 runs. The Cowgirls were led offensively by Ashley Paiz, Roxanne Avalos and Natasha Reyes. Paiz went 2-3 from the plate with three RBI's, scoring twice with an inside the park homerun. Avalos was also 2-3 at the plate with two RBI's, scoring once, with a homerun. Reyes rounded out the Cowgirls' impressive offensive performance hitting 3-4 with one RBI, one run, and hit two doubles.

Ashley Paiz (1-0) captured her first win of the season pitching the full five innings for the Cowgirls. Paiz allowed only two runs on four hits, with three walks and striking out one from 24 batters faced in the game.

In the second game of the double header the Cowgirls hit .357 as a team in to come up with four runs and the victory. This assault was led by Cowgirls Regina Aragon, Shelby Hoffman, and Samantha Butler. Aragon went 2-4 at the plate hitting a double, with two RBI's and scoring one run. Hoffman was also 2-4 from the batter's box hitting a triple, with one RBI, and scoring one run. Butler hit 1-3 with a walk and scored one run to complete the Cowgirls offensive assault in the game.

Cowgirl ace Melissa Martinez (2-3) secured her second win of the season in a strong pitching performance that saw her go the distance in the game. Martinez allowed two runs on six hits, walking one batter, hitting two and striking out four in her seven innings of work. Martinez improved her season strikeout total to 28 with another solid performance for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls will be in action again on 2/22 in their first home series against West Texas A&M University. The Cowgirls will host the Lady Buffs at Brandt Field in a non-conference double header with a start time for the first game of 1pm.
