Cowgirls Drop Two Against #7 West Texas A&M

The NMHU Cowgirls lost both games of a home double header to West Texas A&M University who are ranked seventh in NFCA DII. The Cowgirls lost a close first game by a score of 3-0. The Cowgirls then dropped the second game 11-2 in five innings. With the two non-conference losses to the Lady Buffs the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 3-6 record in the season.

In the first game of the Cowgirls struggled at the plate only managing three hits for a team average of .125. Roxanne Avalos, Shelby Hoffman and Alysha Alvarez were the only Cowgirls to record a hit in the game, all singles. The Lady Buffs pitching proved too much for the Cowgirls in the contest.

Melissa Martinez (2-4) was credited with the loss for the game despite holding the #7 Lady Buffs to only three runs on four hits. Martinez kept the game close by striking out 10 batters while allowing three walks making West Texas A&M earn their runs in the contest.

In the second game of the double header the Cowgirls managed to score two runs despite having a tough time with West Texas' tough pitching. The Cowgirls scored their two runs on three hits. The runs were scored by Roxanne Avalos, who drew two walks in both her appearances at the plate, and Amanda Beauchamp. Beauchamp and Alysha Alvarez led the Cowgirls on offense for the game each generating one hit. Beauchamp drove in one RBI and scored from her single. Alvarez also singled and had an RBI.

Ashley Paiz (1-1) was the losing pitcher in the second game for the Cowgirls. She threw four and a third innings allowing nine runs on 11 hits and six walks with one strikeout. Melissa Martinez was brought in to relieve Paiz in the fifth inning. Martinez faced three batters in two thirds of an inning allowing only one hit and striking out one to get the Cowgirls out of the inning. The strikeout gave Martinez 11 strikeouts on the day

The Cowgirls will be in action again this weekend 2/25-26 in their first conference home games of the season against Mesa State College. The Mavericks will visit Brandt Field to play double headers on both days. Start time on Saturday is set for noon while Sunday's double header will start at 11am.
