Cowgirls Fall in Opening RMAC Doubleheader to Mesa State

The NMHU Cowgirls drop both games of their first RMAC double header to Mesa State College at home today. The Cowgirls lost the first game 4-1 and then came close in the second game before losing 6-4. With the two conference losses to the Mavericks the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, start out the conference season with a 0-2 record in the RMAC and 3-8 overall.

Melissa Martinez (2-5) was the losing pitcher in the first game completing all seven innings. Martinez allowed four runs on eight hits in the game. She struck out six of the 29 batters she faced, gave up three walks and hit a batter in her first outing of the day.

The Cowgirls struggled at the plate against Mesa State's Sara Jordan (2-1). The team combined for six hits and one run hitting .214 at the plate. Alysha Alvarez, Shelby Hoffman and Samantha Butler led the Cowgirls' offense in the game. Alvarez managed a hit in her three at bats and scored the only run for the Cowgirls. Hoffman went 1-4 from the plate and had the only RBI for the team. Butler was 1-1 while drawing two walks and was hit by a pitch to reach base in all four of her appearances at the plate.

In the second game of the double header the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs in the first three innings. The Cowgirls closed the gap scoring four runs in the fourth inning but could not generate any more runs and allowed the Mavericks to score once more in the 6-4 loss. Ashley Paiz, Melissa Martinez and Roxanne Avalos led the Cowgirls efforts from the batter's box in the contest. Paiz hit an impressive 3-4 including a double and drove in two runs to lead the Cowgirls. Martinez was 1-3 with an RBI and a double in the game. Avalos was 1-3 from the plate with a double and an RBI.

Ashley Paiz (1-2) was the losing pitcher in the second game for the Cowgirls. She threw two and two thirds innings allowing five runs on nine hits with one walk and one strikeout. Melissa Martinez was brought in to relieve Paiz in the third inning. Martinez allowed one run on three hits and added three more strikeouts to her days tally. The strikeouts would give Martinez nine strikeouts in her two games of work.

The Cowgirls will be in action again tomorrow2/26 in their second home double header against Mesa State. The Mavericks will once again visit Brandt Field to play the Cowgirls in the final double header of the weekend. Start time for the first game on Sunday is set for 11am, with game two set to start 20 minutes after the completion of the first game.
