The NMHU Cowgirls earned a split in their second home double header with conference opponent Mesa State. The Cowgirls' bats came alive in the first game and they won 11-3 in six innings. Then Mesa State came back in game two and captured the win 12-1 in five innings. By splitting the double header with the Mavericks the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve their record to 1-3 in the RMAC and 4-9 overall.
Melissa Martinez (3-5) was the winning pitcher in the first game completing all six innings of play. Martinez allowed three runs on five hits in the game. She faced 26 batters walking four and striking out one while being created with two earned runs in her first outing.
The Cowgirls were able to generate plenty of offense in the first game against Mesa State's Sara Jordan (2-2). The team's bats came to life for an outstanding .400 average with 12 hits on 30 plate appearances.
Samantha Butler,
Alysha Alvarez,
Natasha Reyes and
Amanda Beauchamp were the leaders on offense for the Cowgirls in the first game. Butler was 2-4 at the plate hitting a triple, drove in two runs and scored once. Alvarez hit a triple that earned her two RBIs while going 1-4 from the plate and scored twice. Reyes was 1-4 at the plate with two RBIs and scored once. Beauchamp went 2-4 in the batter's box, scoring twice and had one RBI. The Cowgirls had a great second inning scoring four runs on five hits on their way to the 11-3 victory in six innings.
Melissa Martinez (3-6) also started the second game of the double header and was the losing pitcher. Martinez allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings from the pitcher's circle. She walked one and struck out one in facing 19 batters.
Ashley Paiz was brought in to relieve Martinez in the fourth inning. Paiz allowed six runs on four hits. She struck out one batter while walking two in two innings of relief work.
The Mavericks' Samantha Farris (3-1) was able to shut down the Cowgirls' offense in the second game of the double header. The Cowgirls were only able to generate four hits in 15 at bats, scoring one run.
Natasha Reyes,
Ashley Paiz and
Samantha Butler were the offensive leaders for the Cowgirls in the second game. Reyes hit two doubles and was a perfect 2-2 at the plate. Paiz went 1-2 at the plate and scored the run for the Cowgirls. Butler was 1-2 in the batter's box and had the only RBI for the team.
The Cowgirls will be in action again next weekend 3/5-6 as take to the road to face Colorado School of Mines. The Cowgirls will travel to Golden, Colo. to face an Oredigger team that has a 2-2 RMAC record and is 7-11 in overall play. Start time for the first game on 3/5, at Auraria Field, is set for 12pm. The first game on Sunday 3/6 will begin at 11am.
