Cowboys Sweep Lopers in Day Two Action

The NMHU Cowboys bounced back after their opening loss on 3/12 to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers to sweep the Lopers in day two action. The Cowboys benefitted from excellent outings by their pitching staff as well as resurgence in their offensive output to sweep the Lopers 1-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two. With the wins, the Cowboys are now 7-7 overall and 3-4 in RMAC play.

Game one was a pitchers dual throughout as both pitchers held their opponents scoreless through regulation and forced the seven inning game into extra innings. Kyle Sayers would hold the Lopers scoreless through seven innings while allowing five hits and striking out five UNK batters. Eric Maupin (1-0) would come into the scoreless ballgame in the eighth inning and again hold the Lopers scoreless while striking out one batter to earn his first win of the season. UNK's Roy Metter would hold the Cowboys scoreless through seven, but in the eighth inning the Cowboys came out swinging as they rattled off three straight hits to score the game winning run. The Cowboys game winning run came off of a single to left field by Clay Mohr to advance JP Hollywood across the plate for the win.

The Cowboys finished the game with a .321 team batting average and two doubles. Michael Garcia and Scott Fackrell finished game one with the high numbers for the Cowboys. Garcia finished the day going 2-2 and Fackrell finished 2-4.

Game two featured more outstanding pitching as well as some great offensive output by the Cowboys. Greg Fowler (2-1) got the start and the win for the Cowboys as he allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven UNK batters in his first complete game of the season. Fowler now has 29 strikeouts on the season as he is second one the Cowboys pitching staff in strikeouts behind Kyle Sayers with 30.

Offensively, the Cowboys finished the game with a .318 team batting average and two doubles. Michael Garcia, Clay Mohr and A.J. Alexander would finish the game with the high numbers for the Cowboys. Garcia would finish the game going 2-3 with one run scored. Mohr would finish 1-3 with two RBI's and one double. Alexander would round out the top performers by going 2-2 with one run scored, two RBI's and one double.

The Cowboys look to make it three wins in a row on 3/13 as they take on the UNK Lopers in game four of their four game RMAC series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
