The NMHU Cowgirls lost both games of their RMAC double header against Adams State College on 3/12. In game one the Cowgirls were able to hold Adams State to two runs in the first five innings but the Grizzlies managed to score seven runs in the final two innings to win the game 9-1. In game two the Cowgirls took the lead 2-1 after one inning of play. The lead stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Cowgirls scored one more run to bring the score to 3-1. The Grizzlies answered in the top of the sixth adding four runs in the inning to take the lead 5-3. The Grizzlies added another run in the top of the seventh to go up by three. Shelby Hoffman came to the plate and crushed a ball to the warning track scoring the two base runners and an error by the Grizzlies' third baseman allowed her to advance to the plate and score to tie the game up at six apiece sending the game into extra innings. In the eighth inning Adams State managed to score a run that the Cowgirls couldn't match giving the Grizzlies the win in game two 7-6. With the losses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 1-9 RMAC record and 4-15 in overall play.
Melissa Martinez (3-10) pitched a complete seven innings in game one and was credited with the loss. Martinez allowed nine runs on 13 hits from the pitcher's circle. She faced 34 batters in the game striking out seven, walking four and gave up seven earned runs in the first game of the double header. Martinez's strikeouts on the day give her 68 strikeouts on the season.
The Cowgirls' bats struggled in game one hitting a .241 average as a team.
Samantha Butler,
Shelby Hoffman, and
Alysha Alvarez were the offensive leaders in game one for the Cowgirls. Butler went 2-3 from the batter's box and drew one walk. Hoffman was 1-3 at the plate with an RBI and one walk. Alvarez also hit 1-3 from the batter's box and scored the Cowgirls' lone run in the game.
Ashley Paiz (1-4) earned the loss in game two pitching the entire eight innings in the game. Paiz allowed seven runs on 12 hits from the pitcher's circle. She faced 36 batters, striking out six, walking one, hit three, and allowed six earned runs. Paiz held the Grizzlies to only one run on five hits through five innings, before Adams State's offense could gain the upper hand.
The Cowgirls hit .286 as a team in the second game of the double header.

Ashley Paiz, and
Samantha Butler were the leading batters for the Cowgirls in game two. Hoffman had an outstanding game going 3-4 from the batter's box. She hit a double and a triple, scoring two runs and had four RBI's. Her seventh inning triple scored three runs, after the Grizzlies error allowed her to score, sending the game into extra innings. Paiz was 2-3 at the plate, scoring a run and drawing a walk. Butler 2-4 from the batter's box and scored a run for the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls' offense was close to securing the win but was unable to generate a run in the eighth inning, letting the Grizzlies steal the victory 7-6.
The Cowgirls continue conference action tomorrow 3/13 in their second double header against Adams State. The Cowgirls will again host the Grizzlies for two games at Brandt Field. Start time for the first game on Sunday is set for 11am. The second game of the double header will follow shortly after the completion of the first game.
