The NMHU Cowboys were edged out by the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 14-12 on 3/13 in game four of their RMAC weekend series. The Lopers would jump out on the Cowboys early with and 11-0 advantage through two innings played. The NMHU bats woke up in the third inning as they would tally five runs in the third inning to chip away at the sizeable UNK lead to make it 11-5 going into the fourth inning. The Cowboys would string together some runs in the final innings to come as close as 13-12 to the Lopers, but that wouldn't be enough as the Lopers would score one in the top of the ninth and hold the Cowboys scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for the win. With the loss the Cowboys drop to 7-8 on the season and 3-5 in RMAC play.
The Cowboy offense came out swinging against the Lopers in game four as they would rally from an early deficit to score 12 runs on the day, their highest scoring game this season. The Cowboys would finish the day with a .418 team batting average and hit six doubles and one homerun.
J.P. Hollywood,
A.J. Alexander and
Luis Saenz would have the high numbers for the Cowboys on the day. Hollywood would finish the day 2-4 with two runs scored and two doubles. Alexander would finish 2-3 with one run scored, one RBI and one double. Saenz would finish the day 2-2 with one run scored and four RBI's. Angel Nunez would also contribute off the bench going 2-3 with one run scored, two RBI's and one homerun.
Jason Sirak (1-2) got the start for the Cowboys and would struggle early as he allowed six runs on six hits while striking out one UNK batter in one-third of an inning pitched.
Alec New would come in for Sirak and allow three earned runs on five hits while retiring one batter in one inning pitched.
Richard Sandoval would come in for New and allow one run on three hits and strikeout four Kearney batters in one and two-third innings pitched.
Jared Bowser would then come in and allow one run on two hits and strikeout four UNK batters in three innings pitched.
Xavier Tavorn would then come in and allow one run on three hits and strikeout two batters in two innings pitched.
Eric Maupin would close out the game for the Cowboys and allow no runs on one hit and strikeout two UNK batters in one inning pitched.
The Cowboys will be in action again on 3/15 as they travel to Portales, N.M. to take on in-state rival the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
