Cowgirls Fall in Second Double Header Against Adams State

The NMHU Cowgirls fall in both games of their second RMAC double header against Adams State on 3/13. The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one and Adams State came away with the victory 5-0. In game two the Cowgirls took the lead 2-1 after the first inning of play. The Grizzlies grabbed the lead 4-2 after scoring one run in the second inning and two runs in the third. Adams State would add to their lead, scoring in each of the next three innings to make the score 8-3 at the end of six innings of play. The Cowgirls held the Grizzlies scoreless in the seventh inning and attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cowgirls scored four runs on five hits in the inning to come within one point of Adams State before the final out dashed their hopes giving the Grizzlies the victory 8-7. With the losses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 1-11 RMAC record and 4-17 in overall play.

Melissa Martinez (3-11) was the losing pitcher in game one throwing a complete seven innings. Martinez allowed five runs on nine hits from the pitcher's circle in game one. She gave up four earned runs, facing 30 batters. Martinez struck out eight batters, hit two, and walked one in the losing effort.

The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one, only getting four hits in the game for a .154 team batting average. Samantha Butler, and Ashley Paiz were the offensive leaders for the team in game one. Butler was 2-4 from the batter's box in the game to hit .500. Paiz hit 1-3 in the game with one walk. Paiz led off the third inning with a rocket to right centerfield earning a triple for her effort.

Ashley Paiz (1-5) as credited with the loss in game two of the double header. Paiz allowed five runs on nine hits, throwing four innings from the pitcher's circle. She faced 20 batters, striking out two, and walking four batters in the game. Melissa Martinez was brought in to relieve Paiz in top of the fifth inning. Martinez allowed three runs on four hits, throwing three innings in relief from the pitcher's circle. She faced 15 batters striking out three, walking one and hitting one batter in her second outing of the day. With her 11 total strikeouts on the day, Martinez increases her season strikeout total to 79.

The Cowgirls' bats came alive in the game two of the double header, hitting .353 as a team in the game. Natasha Reyes, Amanda Beauchamp and Kristy Partridge were the Cowgirls' leading batters in game two. Reyes had an excellent second game from the batter's box, going 4-5 at the plate. She had one RBI and scored twice for the Cowgirls. Beauchamp hit 1-2 in the game, with one walk, one run scored, one RBI and reached base another time after being hit by a pitch. She started the Cowgirls' seventh inning rally, smashing a double to left centerfield from the leadoff spot and eventually scored when Alisha Perry singled through the left side. Partridge was 2-4 at the plate, with one RBI and one run scored.

The NMHU Cowgirls will continue conference action next weekend, 3/19-20, for two double headers on the road against Fort Lewis College. The Cowgirls will travel to Durango, Colo. to face a Skyhawks team that has a 5-5 record in the RMAC and 6-9 in overall play. Start time for Saturday's first game is set for 12pm. Sunday's first game will start at 11am. The second game of both double headers will follow shortly after the completion of the first game.
