Cowgirls Split First Double Header Against Fort Lewis

The NMHU Cowgirls split their first double header against Fort Lewis College on 3/19.  The Cowgirls struggled at the plate early in game one, only able to generate three hits through the first six innings. In the top of the seventh inning, down by five, the Cowgirls' bats rallied to score four runs on five hits but came up just short dropping the first game to the Skyhawks 5-4. The Cowgirls' bats carried over to game two of the double header. They managed to score six runs in the second inning, then added five more runs in the fourth inning, and closed out the game in the fifth inning by scoring three more runs. After holding the Skyhawks to only one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Cowgirls got the big win 14-5 in five innings of play. With the split the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 2-12 RMAC record and 5-18 in overall play.

Melissa Martinez (3-12) was the losing pitcher in game one throwing a complete six innings. She allowed five runs on seven hits, facing 32 batters in game one. Martinez struck out two batters, and walked seven in the loss.

The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one, going 8-28 for a .286 team batting average. Roxanne Avalos, Shelby Hoffman, and Alyssa Ramirez were the leading batters for the Cowgirls in game one. Avalos was an impressive 3-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Hoffman hit 1-3 from the batter's box. She scored a run, had one RBI and one walk in the game. Ramirez was 2-4 from the plate with a double in the first game.

Ashley Paiz (2-5) was the winning pitcher in the second game of the double header. Paiz threw five complete innings from the pitcher's circle, allowing five runs on six hits. She faced 26 batters in the game, striking out two, walking three and allowed four earned runs in the victory.

Fort Lewis' pitchers struggled with the Cowgirls in game two. They walked 12 total batters in the game and the Cowgirls were able to take advantage to drive in 14 runs in five innings of play. Kristy Partridge, Ashley Paiz, Alyssa Ramirez, and Shelby Hoffman led the Cowgirls' offensive surge in game two. Kristy Partridge had an outstanding second game at the plate going 2-3 with one walk. Partridge hit a bases loaded triple with two outs in the top of the second inning to drive in three runs. Besides the triple she also had a double, and scored twice to add to her three RBIs. Ashley Paiz also had a great second game going 2-3 with two walks from the batter's box. Paiz scored twice, had three RBIs, and stole a base in the game. Alyssa Ramirez was 2-2 at the plate and drew two walks. Ramirez drove in a run and scored twice. Shelby Hoffman was 1-4 at the plate and drew one walk. Hoffman had 3 RBIs, and scored once to help lift the Cowgirls to victory. The Skyhawks allowed the Cowgirls runners in scoring position and the Cowgirls took full advantage of it in an impressive offensive performance that generated 14 runs.

The NMHU Cowgirls will continue conference action tomorrow, 3/20, for their second road double header against conference opponent Fort Lewis College. Start time for Sunday's first game is set for 11am, with game two to follow shortly after.
