The NMHU Cowgirls earned a split in their second double header against Fort Lewis on 3/20.  The Cowgirls lost a close one in game one of the double header.  The Skyhawks took the lead off a first inning grand slam, but 
Ashley Paiz hit a triple in the top of the second to drive in three runs and even the score at four apiece.  The Skyhawks got a two run home run in the bottom of the second inning to go back on top 6-4.  The Cowgirls managed to score three more runs while holding the Skyhawks to only one run to even the score up at seven apiece.  Fort Lewis won the game on a run scoring single down the right field line to win the game in the bottom of the seventh 8-7.  In game two the Cowgirls were victorious behind a two hit pitching performance by 
Melissa Martinez.  Martinez held the Skyhawks to only one run in the first three innings, striking out the side in two of the three innings.  In the bottom of the third the Cowgirls offense came to life scoring five runs on five hits in the inning, including a two run home run by 
Kristy Partridge.  
Natasha Reyes knocked in two more runs in the top of the sixth inning with another home run to give the Cowgirls some breathing space.  The Skyhawks didn't have an answer for Martinez's pitching and the Cowgirls won game two 8-1.  With the split the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 3-13 RMAC record and 6-19 in overall play.
Ashley Paiz (2-6) was the losing pitcher in game one of the double header.  She threw a complete six and a third innings from the pitcher's circle allowing eight runs on eight hits.  Paiz faced 33 batters in the game, struck out two and walked six in the losing effort. 
The Cowgirls bats carried over from the previous day's double header, the team hit for a .423 average in game one.

Roxanne Avalos, and 
Alyssa Ramirez provide the majority of the Cowgirls' offense in game one.  Paiz was 2-5 from the plate with four RBIs including her three run triple in the top of the second inning to tie the game up.  Avalos was 2-2 at the plate and drew two walks.  She had one RBI and scored a run.  Ramirez went 2-3 from the batter's box.  She also had an RBI and scored one run.  The Cowgirls' offense fought back in game one tying the game up at seven apiece in the seventh inning but the Skyhawks were able to snatch the victory with one run in the bottom of the final inning.
Melissa Martinez (4-12) returned to her dominate form in the pitcher's circle in game two, earning the victory in an impressive performance where she allowed only two hits to the Skyhawks.  She pitched a complete seven innings allowing one run on two hits.  Martinez dominated the Skyhawks' batters, striking out 13 and only walking one in 25 batters faced.  
The Cowgirls offense was alive in game two of the day's double header.  Two Cowgirls had homeruns in the game that saw the offense put up eight runs.

Natasha Reyes, and 
Alyssa Ramirez were the offensive leaders in game two for the Cowgirls.  Partridge was 2-4 from the batter's box with a two run home run in the third inning to give the Cowgirls the lead in the game.  She had two RBIs and scored twice.  Reyes was also 2-4 at the plate and had a two run homer as well.  She had two RBIs and scored twice.  Ramirez was 3-4 from the batter's box, and scored one run for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls were able to capture two wins in the two double headers on the road at Fort Lewis this weekend.  Their two loses were close games lost at the very end of the game by one run in each game.  In each case the Cowgirls rebounded in the second game to produce big wins with sizeable scoring margins.
The NMHU Cowgirls will continue in action again on Tuesday, 3/22, as they host a non-conference double header against in state rival ENMU.  The Zias visit Brandt Field with a 1-5 record in the Lone Star Conference and 6-20 in overall play.  Start time for Tuesday's first game of the double header is set for 1pm with game two to follow shortly after the completion of game one.
