Zias Sweep Cowgirls in Non-Conference Action

The NMHU Cowgirls lost both games of their non-conference double header against Eastern New Mexico University on 3/22. The Cowgirls lost the first game by a score of 8-4. The game was scoreless through two innings of play, then in the top of the third the Zias scored four runs, but the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. ENMU managed another run in the fourth inning and the Cowgirls scored a run in the fifth to keep the game within one run. The Zias scored three more runs in the sixth inning and the Cowgirls couldn't answer giving ENMU the win 8-4. In game two the Zias scored first driving in two runs in the fourth inning, with the Cowgirls able to get one run in that inning. In the fifth inning the Zias scored another run and the Cowgirls answered with two runs to tie the game up at three apiece. ENMU was able to generate two more runs in the sixth inning and then held the Cowgirls scoreless to again come away with the victory 5-3. With the two non-conference loses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 6-21 overall record while staying at a 3-13 RMAC record.

Melissa Martinez (4-13) was credited with the loss in game one. She faced 41 batters while completing the full seven innings of play from the pitcher's circle. Martinez allowed eight runs on 13 hits, striking out 13 batters and walking four.

The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one hitting .250 as a team. Natasha Reyes, Roxanne Avalos, and Alyssa Ramirez were the leaders on offense for the Cowgirls. Reyes was 1-3 from the batter's box and drew one walk. She scored a run and had one RBI in her offensive effort. Avalos was 1-2 at the plate with two walks and an RBI in the game. Ramirez hit 1-4 in the game and knocked in one RBI.

Ashley Paiz (2-7) was the losing pitcher in game two of the double header. She threw six innings, facing 26 batters, and allowed five runs on six hits. Paiz struck out five batters, walking none and three of her five runs were earned. Melissa Martinez was brought in to relieve Paiz in the seventh inning. Martinez faced four batters in the inning, allowing only one hit, struck out one batter, and walked none. With her 14 strikeouts on the day Martinez improves her total strikeouts in the season to 108.

The Cowgirls did better offensively in game two, going 10-27 at the plate for a .370 team batting average. Natasha Reyes, Alyssa Ramirez, and Ashley Paiz were the Cowgirls' leaders from the batter's box in game two. Reyes hit 1-4 at the plate, scored one run and had one RBI. Ramirez was 2-3 from the batter's box in the game with one run scored. Paiz was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with two walks and a stolen base in the game for the Cowgirls.

The NMHU Cowgirls will continue conference action this weekend, 3/26-27, as they host RMAC opponent Metro State College in two double headers. The Roadrunners visit Brandt Field in second place in the RMAC East Division, boasting a 11-5 conference record and 16-8 in overall play. Start time for the first game of Saturday's double header is set for 12pm. The first game on Sunday will start at 11am. The second game of both day's double headers will begin shortly after the completion of the first game.
