Cowgirls Drop Two to Orediggers

The NMHU Cowgirls lost both games of their double header, on 3/5, against Colorado School of Mines. In the first game the Cowgirls were able to hold the Orediggers scoreless through four innings but ended up losing the game 5-0 in seven innings. The Orediggers found their offensive stride in game two of the double header and came away with the victory 11-1 in five innings. With the losses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to 1-5 RMAC record and 4-11 in overall play.

Melissa Martinez (3-7) was the losing pitcher in game one completing a full six innings from the pitcher's circle. Martinez held the Orediggers scoreless for four innings but gave up three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth. She allowed five runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one while facing 24 batters.

The Cowgirls were not able to generate much offense versus CSM producing only five hits from 25 plate appearances for a .200 team batting average. Roxanne Avalos, Amanda Beauchamp and Alysha Alvarez were the top offensive performers for the Cowgirls in the game. Avalos went 1-3 from the plate, hitting a double. Beauchamp was 0-1 form the plate, drew two walks and stole one base. Alvarez hit 1-3 from the plate in the first game for the Cowgirls.

Ashley Paiz (1-3) was the losing pitcher in game two pitching two and a third innings. Paiz allowed nine runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking four in her start for the Cowgirls. Shelby Hoffman was brought in to relieve Paiz in the third inning. Hoffman pitched one and two thirds innings in her first appearance from the pitcher's circle for NMHU. She allowed two runs on two hits, walking two batters and had one strike out to complete game two for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls struggled from the plate in game two only able to earn two hits from 17 plate appearances. The leaders for the Cowgirls in game two were Natasha Reyes and Amanda Beauchamp. Reyes was 1-2 in the batter's box with one run and an RBI. She hit a solo homerun to centerfield in the top of the fifth inning to score the lone run for the Cowgirls. Beauchamp was 1-2 from the plate in the second game for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls will continue action in their second double header against the Orediggers tomorrow 3/6. The Cowgirls will be looking for their first conference road victory at Auraria Field against the Colorado School of Mines who are ranked second in the East Division of the RMAC. Start time for the first game is set to begin at 11 am.
