Cowgirls' Bats Fall Silent Against Orediggers

Melissa Martinez
The NMHU Cowgirls dropped both games of their second double header against Colorado School of Mines on 3/6. The Cowgirls losses on the day came by a score of 4-0 in each game. With the losses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to 1-7 RMAC record and 4-13 in overall play.

Melissa Martinez (3-9) pitched a full six innings in game one drawing the loss. Martinez allowed four runs on five hits from the pitcher's circle. She faced 23 batters in the game striking out five, walking one and gave up three earned runs in the Cowgirls first loss of the day.

The Cowgirls were unable to get any offense going against the Orediggers in the first game. They were only able to get two hits from their lineup in game one. Alyssa Ramirez and Ashley Paiz were the two batters who reached base for the Cowgirls. Both Ramirez and Paiz hit singles in the third inning. Ramirez led off for the Cowgirls dropping a single into centerfield to give the team a base runner. Paiz went to the plate with two outs and hit a single through the right side to advance the Ramirez to second with a single, but the Cowgirls were not able to capitalize in the inning leaving both runners on base to end the inning. The Orediggers came away with the win in game one by a final score of 4-0.

Melissa Martinez (3-9) also started the second game of the double header for the Cowgirls and was credited with the loss. She completed another six innings for the team facing 25 batters. Martinez held the Orediggers scoreless for the first two innings but CSM managed to score four runs in the third. Martinez allowed four runs on eight hits, struck out three batters and walked three. She had eight total strikeouts between her two pitching appearances on the day.

The Cowgirls were not able to get a hit in the second game of the day. Alisha Perry and Amanda Beauchamp both drew a walk to reach base for the Cowgirls. CSM's Kelly Unkrich (6-5) proved to be too much for the Cowgirls batters from the pitcher's circle, throwing a no-hitter to secure the victory for the Orediggers in the second game by a score of 4-0.

The Cowgirls continue conference action next weekend 3/11-12 when they return home to Las Vegas, NM. The Cowgirls will be hosting the RMAC West Division second place Adams State College for two double headers at Brandt Field.
