Cowgirls Split with Eagles

The NMHU Cowgirls split their RMAC Pod Play double header against Chadron State, on 4/10. Chadron State jumped to an early lead with a seven run second inning. The Cowgirls scored a run in the third, but the Eagles put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cowgirls started a rally in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits, but it wouldn't be enough as they fell to Chadron State, 10-6, in game one. Game two was a pitcher's duel. The Cowgirls were able to manufacture a few runs with Melissa Martinez scoring in the third off a sacrifice fly to left by Samantha Butler, and Butler scored from third base in the sixth inning on an Eagles' error. The Cowgirls' Melissa Martinez threw seven shutout innings and hit a home run in the seventh inning to give the Cowgirls the victory in game two, 3-0. With the split in the conference double header the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 4-24 record in the RMAC and 7-32 in overall play.

The Cowgirls were able to generate just enough offense to get the win behind the shutout effort from the pitcher's circle. Melissa Martinez and Samantha Butler were the leaders on offense in the game. Martinez was 1-2 with a walk from the plate. She hit a home run in the seventh inning, scored twice and had an RBI. Butler was 0-2 at the plate with a walk, but scored one run and had an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field in the game.

The Mustangs will visit Brandt Field, in Las Vegas, N.M., ranked fourth in the RMAC West Division with a 13-13 conference record and 17-25 in overall play.
