Cowgirls Fall to Mustangs

The NMHU Cowgirls dropped both games of their home double header against Western New Mexico University, on 4/16. The Mustangs took the lead in game one with a run in the third inning, and then added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Roxanne Avalos hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to get the Cowgirls a run, making the score 4-1. The Mustangs added one more run in the seventh inning to secure the victory by a score of 5-1. In game two, the Mustangs took the early lead scoring a run in the second inning. The Cowgirls tied the game up with an RBI single from Samantha Butler in the bottom of the third inning. In the fifth inning the Cowgirls took the lead when Ashley Paiz hit a two RBI double into left field to make the score 3-1. WNMU answered back in the top of the sixth scoring two runs of their own to tie the game up at three apiece. In the top of the seventh the Mustangs took advantage of a bases loaded, one out situation to score three runs and take the lead 6-3. The Cowgirls started a rally in the seventh inning when they scored one run off of Alyssa Ramirez's sacrifice fly to centerfield but they would come up short letting the Mustangs escape with the victory 6-4. With the losses the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 4-26 record in the RMAC and 7-34 in overall play.

Melissa Martinez (5-20) was the credited with the loss in game one of the double header. She threw a complete seven innings from the pitcher's circle for the Cowgirls, facing 35 batters. Martinez allowed five runs on 13 hits, struck out seven batters, and walked one in the game.

The Cowgirls combined to hit for a .276 team batting average in game one. Samantha Butler and Kristy Partridge were the Cowgirls' offensive leaders in the game. Butler was 3-4 at the plate with one run scored. Partridge hit 2-4 from the batter's box. Roxanne Avalos hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Butler to score.

Ashley Paiz was the starting pitcher in game two for the Cowgirls. She threw six and a third innings from the pitcher's circle, facing 32 batters. Paiz allowed six runs on six hits, with five of the runs being earned. She struck out five batters and walked five batters in her outing. Melissa Martinez (5-21) was credited with the loss in game two after she was brought in to relieve Paiz in the top of the seventh inning. Martinez threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit that allowed two Mustangs to cross the plate. She had no strikeouts and walked none in her relief appearance in game two.

The Cowgirls were able to score four runs in the second game with the team improving to an overall .387 batting average. Alysha Alvarez, Kristy Partridge, and Samantha Butler were the Cowgirls leaders from the batter's box. Alvarez was a perfect 2-2 with a walk at the plate. She hit a double and scored twice in the game. Partridge was also perfect at the plate, hitting 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. Butler was 2-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Melissa Martinez and Ashley Paiz both added to the Cowgirls' offense. Martinez was 2-3 with a double and a run scored, while Paiz hit a two RBI double in the fifth inning.

The NMHU Cowgirls will continue conference action on Sunday, 4/17, in the second double header of their series against in-state rivals WNMU. The first game for tomorrow is scheduled to begin at 11am with game two to follow shortly after the completion of game one.
