The NMHU Cowgirls split the second double header of their home conference series against in-state rival Western New Mexico University, on Sunday 4/17. The Mustangs were victorious in game one by a score of 2-0. The game was a pitcher's duel that had only nine hits combined by the two teams. In game two, the Cowgirls offense was on fire scoring ten total runs and ending the game by eight run rule in the sixth inning. The Cowgirls struck first scoring a run in the first inning with an RBI single from
Roxanne Avalos that scored
Samantha Butler from third base. In the second inning the Cowgirls extended their lead to five, putting up four runs including a two RBI triple by
Kristy Partridge. In the fourth inning the Cowgirls added two more runs to the scoreboard when
Roxanne Avalos hit a two run home run to left field, giving the Cowgirls the 7-0 lead. WNMU closed the gap in the top of the sixth inning by scoring two runs on a home run and an RBI single making the score 7-2. The Cowgirls closed the deal in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shelby Hoffman smashed a two RBI triple to right centerfield and then completed the eight run rule scoring off of
Melissa Martinez's RBI single. The Cowgirls' bats stormed to the victory in game two with a final score of 10-2. With the conference split the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 5-27 record in the RMAC and 8-35 in overall play.
Melissa Martinez (5-22) was the losing pitcher in game one of the double header. She threw a complete seven innings from the pitcher's circle, facing 28 batters. Martinez allowed two runs on five hits, struck out three batters, and walked one in the game.
The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one only hitting .174 as a team in the game.
Ashley Paiz and
Alysha Alvarez were the bright spots offensively in the game for the Cowgirls. Paiz was 1-3 at the plate with a walk and a double. Alvarez was also 1-3 in the game and stole a base in the game.
Ashley Paiz (3-12) was the winning pitcher in game two of the double header for the Cowgirls. She threw the complete six innings from the pitcher's circle, facing 23 batters. Paiz allowed two runs on four hits, struck out two batters, and walked none in the Cowgirls victory.
The Cowgirls' offense gave the Mustangs fits in game two of the double header, hitting for an impressive .406 team batting average.
Samantha Butler,
Roxanne Avalos,
Melissa Martinez, and
Shelby Hoffman were the leaders for the Cowgirls in the game. Butler was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with two walks. She had an RBI and scored four runs in the game. Avalos hit 3-4 from the batter's box with a two run home run in the fourth inning. She had three RBIs and scored one run. Martinez was also 3-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Hoffman hit 2-4 in the batter's box. She scored two runs and hit a two RBI triple in the sixth inning.
Kristy Partridge also hit a two RBI triple in the game.
The NMHU Cowgirls will continue action on Tuesday, 4/19, as they travel to Portales, NM for a non-conference double header against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University. The Cowgirls will visit the Zias who have a 2-13 record in the Lone Star Conference and 11-35 in overall play. The first game in Portales is scheduled to begin at 2pm with game two to follow shortly after the completion of game one.
