The NMHU Cowgirls lost both games of their double header, on 4/9, to the UC-Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions jumped to an early lead in game one, scoring five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam home run. Despite getting two more hits than UCCS in the game, the Cowgirls were only able to come up with one run, in the third inning, and ended up losing the game 5-1. An exciting game two saw the Cowgirls' offense get a spark thanks in part to the bat of
Shelby Hoffman. The Mountain Lions again took the early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning with a two run home run leading the way. The Cowgirls put up two runs in the second inning, but UCCS answered back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams put up a run in the third to make the score 7-3 with the Mountain Lions in the lead. In the top of the fifth inning the Cowgirls'
Shelby Hoffman hit a three run home run to close the gap to within one, 7-6. UCCS was able to open the lead back up with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including another two run home run, making the score 10-6 going into the final inning.
Shelby Hoffman again gave the Cowgirls hope when she hit a two run home run to close to within two points of the Mountain Lions. But it wasn't enough as the Cowgirls weren't able to generate anymore offense and UCCS came away with the victory 10-8. With the two conference losses to the Mountain Lions the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 3-23 record in the RMAC and 6-31 in overall play.
Melissa Martinez (4-18) was credited with the loss in game one of the double header. She threw a complete six innings, facing 24 batters from the pitcher's circle. Martinez allowed five runs on six hits, struck out six batters and walked one.
The Cowgirls struggled at the plate in game one only hitting .267 as a team.
Samantha Butler and
Ashley Paiz were the leaders for the Cowgirls from the batter's box. Butler was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI double. Paiz also hit 2-4 in the game and scored the Cowgirls' lone run.
Ashley Paiz (2-12) was the losing pitcher for the Cowgirls in game two of the double header. She pitched two and two-thirds innings, facing 21 batters from the pitcher's circle. Paiz allowed seven runs on 10 hits, struck out two batters, walked one, with six of her runs being earned.
Melissa Martinez was brought in to relieve Paiz in the third inning. She faced 15 batters, allowing three runs on four hits, walking one batter in her three and a third innings from the pitcher's circle.
The Cowgirls' offense came to life in game two with a .382 team batting average.
Shelby Hoffman,
Alyssa Ramirez, and
Roxanne Avalos were the offensive leaders for the Cowgirls in the game. Hoffman led the Cowgirls' efforts in the game, going 2-4 at the plate. She hit two home runs in the game, with two runs scored, and drove in an impressive five RBIs. Ramirez was also 2-4 from the batter's box, with an RBI and two runs scored. Avalos was 2-4 at the plate, with two doubles, and a run scored.
The NMHU Cowgirls will continue conference action, on 4/10, when they face Chadron State in the last double header of the RMAC Pod Play series. Because of the RMAC Softball 48 game schedule, NMHU faces two RMAC opponents two times instead of the normal four in a Pod Play series. The Eagles and the Cowgirls will face off at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs, with an 11am start time for game one. The second game of the double header will start shortly after the completion of game one.
