The NMHU Cowboys fell in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament to the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney by a final score of 6-3 on 5/12. With the loss the Cowboys will now await their next opponent as they play the loser of the 7:00 p.m. game between #5 Regis University and #2 Mesa State College on 5/13 at 12:00 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.
Both teams would remain scoreless through the first three innings of play until NMHU would break the ice as
Jarod Robinette would score off an
A.J. Alexander sacrifice fly. The Cowboys would take a 2-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but the Lopers would answer back with two runs of their own in the fifth to tie up the score 2-2. The Lopers would take the lead in the sixth inning with the Cowboys answering back in the eighth with a run of their own to knot it up at 3-3. The Lopers would then take the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning as UNK's Luke Valerius would bring in two runs off a single through the left side bringing the Lopers lead to 5-3. The Lopers would add in one more run in the eighth to make it 6-3 in favor of UNK. UNK's Jake Kresse would then come in to pitch in the ninth inning and strikeout the side to secure the 6-3 for the Lopers.
Trent Evins would get the start for the Cowboys and hold the Lopers to just three runs on eight hits while striking out five batters in six innings pitched. Evins would leave the game with the score tied 3-3.
Cruz Sedillo would then come in for Evins and allow one hit and no runs in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Richard Sandoval (1-1) would then come in for Sedillo and would be credited with the loss for the Cowboys. Sandoval would allow two runs on one hit while striking out one batter in one-third of an inning pitched.
Antonio Huez Robles would then come in and allow one run scored on no hits in one-third of an inning pitched.
Jared Bowser would then come in and hold the Lopers scoreless allowing two hits while striking out one batter in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Offensively for the Cowboys
Eric Maupin and
Clay Mohr would have the high numbers. Maupin finished the day 3-4 with two runs scored and one triple. Mohr finished 3-4 with one double and one triple for the day.
A.J. Alexander would bring in two runs on the day with two sacrifice flies in the game.
The Cowboys will now wait to see who their next opponent in the RMAC Tournament will be as they take on the loser of the 7:00 p.m. game between #5 Regis University and #2 Mesa State College on 5/13 at 12:00 p.m. in an elimination game.
