Cowboys Shock the RMAC Defeating #17 Colorado School of Mines 40-34

The NMHU Cowboys shocked the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 40-34 victory over the OreDiggers of the Colorado School of Mines on 9/17 in Golden. Colo. Trailing 34-33 with one minute remaining in the game the Cowboys executed their “one minute drill” to perfection as they marched 80 yards down the field for the game winning score as Nick Ponce connected with Deandre Green from the two yard line to seal the win for the Cowboys. The OreDiggers came into the game ranked 17th in the nation as the defending RMAC Champion. CSM had only given up one touchdown and allowed 169.5 yards of offense per game going into today's game until they faced the Cowboys. As the Cowboys finished the day with 558 total yards and six touchdowns on the day. The Cowboys win over CSM is the first victory over a nationally ranked team since the 1998 season. With the win, the Cowboys are now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in RMAC play.

“This is a great win for our program and our university. Our guys continue to battle. I'm proud of the way we competed. We still have a long way to go as a program, but its easier to work on those details after a big win,” commented NMHU Head Coach Eric Young after his Cowboys thrilling victory over the #17 Colorado School of Mines OreDiggers on 9/17.

Offensively for the Cowboys Jermaine Holmes, Nick Ponce and Deandre Green would be the stories of the day as each of them had knock out performances. Holmes would finish the day with 188 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Ponce, in his first game as a Cowboy, would finish the day 28 of 49 for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Green would finish with 145 yards on eight receptions and three touchdowns on the day. As a whole, the Cowboys finished the game with 211 yards on the ground and 347 yards in the air for 558 total yards and six touchdowns on the day. That is the second straight game that the Cowboys have gained over 500 yards offensively.

Defensively the Cowboys held the CSM's quarterback Clay Garcia to one touchdown on the day and 338 yards in the air as the Cowboy ball hawks intercepted the RMAC's Preseason Player of the Year three times. Mines would finish the day with just 387 yards, a pale in comparison to their 521 yards per game average. Jordan Campbell, Tony Udley and Abdul Kanneh would lead the Cowboys defense for the game. Campbell finished with 10 tackles, one sack and one interception. Udley would be close behind with eight tackles for the game and Kanneh would finish with seven tackles for the game.

Next on the docket for the Cowboys is the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University. The Cowboys will host the Mavericks in Perkins Stadium at 1:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M. on 9/24.
