Box Score The NMHU Cowboys sent their senior class out in style by dismantling in-state rival Western New Mexico University 58-0 on 11/10 in Las Vegas, N.M. The Pokes had their best defensive performance of the season holding the Mustangs to just 85 total offensive yards. The Cowboy offense had their second best performance of the season racking up 630 yards with a 256 yards rushing and 374 yards passing. With the win, the Cowboys bring home the “Warrior Helmet” traveling trophy for the first time since the 2008 season. The Pokes end their regular season with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-2 RMAC showing. The Cowboys record in 2012 is the first time since 1998 that the Pokes have won eight games in a season.
Offensively, the Cowboys had a great showing against the Mustangs. Rolling up 630 total offensive yards (256 yards rushing and 374 yards passing) the Pokes scoring machine had a season high 58 points against WNMU.
Emmanuel Lewis led the way for the Pokes in passing, completing 36 of 56 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns with a long pass of 40 yards. Lewis also got it done with his legs rushing for 40 yards on 12 carries for a total offensive day of 367 yards.
Lavelle Peterson and
EJ Woods carried the load for the Cowboys in rushing against their in-state rival. Peterson rumbled for a season high 117 yards on 13 carries and two scores. Woods followed suit with a career rushing day of his own. Woods finished with 103 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns.
Kevon Williams closed out his four year career at NMHU leading the Cowboys in receiving with 13 catches for 114 yards.
Keondric Reynolds finished his career with eight receptions for 56 yards.
Darius Davis rounds out the top three receivers with five catches for 78 yards and three scores with a long catch of 40 yards.
Defensively, the Pokes dominated the line of scrimmage against the Mustangs allowing a season low of 25 yards rushing. The Cowboys secondary also had a great day allowing a season low 60 yards receiving to the Mustangs. As a whole the Pokes held the Mustangs to just 85 yards for the day.
Devin Howard led the way for the Cowboys defensively with 14 tackles, three tackles for a loss of 12 yards, three sacks for a loss of nine yards and three quarterback hurries.
Jordan Campbell also had a double digit tackle day for the Cowboy defense. Campbell finished his career as a Cowboy with 13 tackles, a season high 5.5 tackles for a loss of 45 yards, three sacks for a loss of 29 yards and three quarterback hurries.
Randy Salmon rounds out the top three Cowboy performers with six tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss of three yards and one sack for a loss of one yard.
The Cowboys finish their regular season with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-2 RMAC mark. The Cowboys will finish third overall in the final RMAC standings with their 7-2 conference record.
