Fowler Strikes Out Season High 10 Batters

#24 Greg Fowler
The NMHU Cowboys started out their 2012 campaign on a winning note as they defeated the previously unbeaten Texans of Tarleton State University 4-2 in their first game of the University of Texas-Permian Basin Tournament on 2/10. The Cowboys found themselves trailing the Texans 1-0 after the first inning of play, but would tie it up 1-1 in the top of the third inning off of a Thomas King homerun over the left field fence. The Texans took back the lead in the bottom of the third inning scoring one run to put them up 2-1. After the third inning, NMHU pitcher, Greg Fowler, took control as he shut down the TSU offense striking out 10 batters for the day. The Cowboys rallied in the seventh inning to score two runs off an Eric Scott RBI double and a Luis Saenz RBI single to take the 4-2 lead over the Texans. Cowboy pitchers, Matt Gualco and Eric Maupin would continue the Cowboys dominance from the pitcher's mound for the final three innings of the game. Gualco would come in for Fowler in the seventh inning and hold the Texas scoreless for the seventh and eighth innings. Maupin would come in for the ninth inning for the Pokes and strike out three batters to earn his first save of the season and the Cowboys their first win of the 2012 season.

Offensive leaders for the Cowboys include: Luis Saenz, Eric Scott and Thomas King. Saenz finished the day 2-4 with one RBI and one double. Scott went 1-3 with one run scored, one RBI and one double. King would finish 1-4 on the day with one run scored, one RBI and one homerun. King's homerun was the hit that sparked the Cowboys offensive output putting the first run on the board for the Pokes.

The Cowboys pitching was the story of the day as the Pokes dominated from the pitcher's mound. Greg Fowler got the start for the Cowboys and held the Texans to two runs on four hits while striking out a game high 10 batters. Matt Gualco would come in for Fowler and allow no hits and no runs while striking out one batter. Eric Maupin came in for the ninth inning and continued the Cowboys pitching dominance over the Texas allowing no runs on one hits while striking out three batters.

The Cowboys will look to continue their winning ways as they continue play in the UTPB Tournament on 2/11 taking on in-state rival Eastern New Mexico and the University of the Incarnate Word for games two and three of their four game slate at the UTPB Tourney.
