Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. - Determined to break a nine game losing streak, the NMHU Cowgirls took the court at the John A. Wilson Complex against Western New Mexico University. The Las Vegas crowd anticipated a good game because the two teams are rivals. The Cowgirls started off slow but ended the first half with a convincing lead. Ending their losing streak, the Cowgirls overcame the Mustangs, 72-56. With the win the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, improved to 4-9 in the RMAC and 4-13 in overall play.

Early in the first half the Cowgirls found themselves in a familiar spot. They were looking for the three-point shot, but the Cowgirls were unsuccessful early. WNMU sustained the lead for the first seven minutes of the game. Playing catch up, a familiar position for the Cowgirls' games this season, was the story early on. Today was different though, the Cowgirls climbed back into the game with two big 3-pointers from Michelle Traynham.

The hot-hand shooter from Belen N.M. had a big game. She finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Going 6-13 from long range, the freshman hit big 3-pointers to gain the lead for the Cowgirls.

After getting the lead NMHU showed no mercy, continuing with the great shooting (43% field goals). Holding the Mustangs down, the Cowgirls embraced the moment. Before the half was over the score had become lopsided, as the Cowgirls ran away with a 21-point lead.

The Cowgirl bench came to play. Lead by Cwynnci Lobaugh (12 points), the bench out-scored the Mustangs bench 28- 3. Cwynnci Lobaugh shot 50 percent (4-8) from the three-point line.

Taking advantage of second-chance points, the Cowgirls' lead peaked in the first three minutes of the second half to 24 points. The second half was comfortable for the Cowgirls as they cruised to their fourth win in RMAC play.

Despite their under .500 record, the win proved the Cowgirls are not push overs. After  winning by 16 points, Coach Darling was happy with her team's effort.  It is very prideful to see the Cowgirls give such an outstanding effort to get the victory.

The Cowgirls head to Colorado for their next competition, Feb.1, for a conference match-up against CSU - Pueblo, in Pueblo, Colo. The Thunderwolves are currently in second place in the RMAC with a 9-3 conference record and 12-4 in overall play. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. If you can't make it out to Pueblo to watch your Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the game via Live Stats.  If you would like to view the game live online, you can click HERE to follow the action on the America One Network.
