Cowgirls Fall to Skyhawks

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Women's Basketball team lost to the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College, on Feb. 9, by the final score of 71-64.  With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 4-13 record in the RMAC and 4-17 in overall play.

Fort Lewis took the initial lead in the game, but the Cowgirls were able to work back into contention.  NMHU took the lead just five minutes into the game and held on to the advantage for a few minutes. 

The Skyhawks regrouped and began hitting 3-pointers consistently.  They went on top again and when the buzzer sounded for halftime, Fort Lewis was up 32-30.

The Cowgirls kept the game close in the second half.  They were trailing by just a few points, until the Skyhawks went on a 10-0 run, taking a nine point lead (46-37) with 14:32 left to play.

The Cowgirls were able to cut the Skyhawks' lead down to one point (51-50) with 9:52 remaining to play, but that was as close as they would get.  Fort Lewis was able to hold off the Cowgirls' attempts to close the scoring gap and when the final buzzer sounded, it was the Skyhawks who were victorious by the final score of 71-64.

Michelle Traynham led the Cowgirls with 21 points.  She was on fire from long range, shooting 5-9 from beyond the three-point line.  Traynham would add seven rebounds and an assist in her 32 minutes on the court.

Morgan Lee secured her first double-double performance of the season.  Lee scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 20 minutes on the court. 

China Smith scored 11 points against the Skyhawks.  She played 28 minutes and grabbed five rebounds.

Alyssa Lopez scored 10 points in her 38 minutes of playing time.  Lopez also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the game.


The Cowgirls will continue conference action at home, on Feb. 15, when they host the #4 Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, in Las Vegas, N.M.  The Mavericks are currently ranked fourth in NCAA DII, and lead the RMAC with a 16-1 conference record.  The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
