Las Vegas, NM ---
Marty Fine has informed the Athletic department that he will be resigning from the head football coach position to pursue an opportunity outside of college football.
Â
"I appreciate the many efforts Coach Fine has made to work with our student athletes," said NMHU President Sam Minner. "He has embodied the Division II theme of 'life in the balance' and has helped players learn important lessons on and off the field."
Â
Coach Fine has produced many quality student-athletes both on and off the field, which includes many All-RMAC and All-Academic honorees.
Â
"I would like to thank Marty for his time here at the institution," said Interim Athletics Director
Jim Deisler. "Marty has done great things here at HU and I wish him luck in his future."
Â
Fine served as the head coach for 3 seasons and also coached in college football for over 35 years
Â
"During Marty's tenure as our football coach, we have installed a new field, improved our interactions with the H-Club, revived a long standing rivalry with Western New Mexico, and made other advances," said President Minner.
Â
When asked about the impression Marty left on the program, President Minner stated:
Â
"This last season, one of our football players came to see me about an issue unrelated to athletics," said President Minner. "We resolved that issue and the discussion turned to football. This young man asserted that Marty had become a role model for him and particularly commented on his enhanced understanding of the importance of honest effort and responsibility on the field and in life. My take was that it was all about integrity…lead a life of integrity and you'll be fine. Marty helped this young man learn that lesson and that says so much about his work at HU. I wish Marty all the best in whatever is before him and thank him for his efforts at HU".
Â
Coach Fine will be stepping down to pursue a Vice President of Offense/Defense Sports role for Football Development and the Cowboy Nation would like to thank and wish Fine and his family, the best of luck.
Â
"I would like to thank President Minner and the Highlands community for allowing me to coach the Cowboys for the last three seasons,"
Marty Fine stated. "Although we didn't win as much as I hoped, we leave Highlands in a better place. I wish all the Cowboys nothing but the best in the future. Thank you".
Â
A national search will begin immediately in pursuit of the next NMHU Head Football Coach.
