Cowgirls Head to Western New Mexico


Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands opened the 2025-2026 women's basketball season with two wins. This Saturday, they will be in Silver City for an in-state matchup.

COACH FEARING:
 Coach Fearing enters her second year as the head coach of the Cowgirls. Last season, Coach reached the RMAC Tournament with a 13-13 record before falling to Colorado Mesa in the first round on the road. It was the first time in 20 years that a Cowgirls basketball team had reached the postseason.

RMAC COACHES POLL: 
New Mexico Highlands women's basketball was picked 8th in the 2025-26 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, released last month. The Cowgirls were 13-14 overall and 10-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference last season.

LAST TIME OUT:
Last weekend in Las Vegas for the South Central Regional crossover, the Cowgirls first got a 16-point victory over Lone Star Conference competitor Cameron University. Followed by a win on Saturday against in-state foe Western New Mexico by 66. Every single active player on the Cowgirls got a bucket in the victory. Five Cowgirls were in double digits.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
The Cowgirls will face in-state foe Western New Mexico again this weekend for the second time in a week. Out of the Lone Star Conference on Saturday (Noon). Brenda Nichols is entering her second year leading the Mustangs program. Nichols is best known for her run as Head Women's Basketball Coach at Sam Houston State University from 2006 to 2018. In her 12 years at Sam Houston, Nichols won the university's first women's Southland Conference championship and appeared in the NCAA Division I postseason tournament in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) and the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Nichols was awarded Southland Conference "Coach of the Year" honors in 2013. Western New Mexico was picked to finish 16th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.


Roster Breakdown:
Coach Lindsey Fearings' roster features a majority of players from New Mexico. It also features two international players—one from the United Kingdom and one from New Zealand.

The Cowgirls will then travel to the West Texas Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon City, Texas, on the campus of West Texas.
