Grand Junction, Colorado - Colorado Mesa took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader from the Cowgirls winning 7-2 and 6-5. NMHU is now 8-16 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
Game one saw the Cowgirls jump to the early 2-0 lead when Karla Bengas doubled in
Heaven Medina and
Alessandra DeLaTrinidad in the top half of the first inning. That would be all the scoring for NMHU as the Maricks took the opener 7-2.
In Saturday's second game, NMHU found themselves in an early 2-0 hole as they came up to bat in the top of the fourth inning.
Alexia Apodaca singled in
Vicky Alvarado to cut the CMU lead to 2-1. They added three more runs in their half of the fifth inning as Karla Bengas and
Vicky Alvarado singled in runs to put NMHU up 4-2.
After the Mavericks recaptured the lead 6-4,
Heaven Medina launched her fourth homer of the season to get the Cowgirls with one at 6-5. NMHU got the go ahead run on base after the Medina homer but could not push the runs across and CMU escaped with the win.
The two teams play a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one from Grand Junction gets under way at 11:00 am.
