#12 Cowboys Top Kearney in RMAC Series 3-1

Coach Steve Jones Earns 400th Career Win at NMHU

The #12 NMHU Cowboys kept their RMAC series win streak alive as they took three out of four games from the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The Cowboys and the Lopers played the first double header of the series on 3/26 and split as the Cowboys took game one 9-6 and dropped game two of the day 6-5. The two teams would take the field again on 3/28 and the Cowboys would sweep on the day by scores of 11-5 and 7-5. Over the weekends wins, Cowboy Head Coach Steve Jones notched his 400th win at NMHU in the first game of the double header on 3/28 and enjoyed an ice cold drenching provided by the Cowboys in celebration of their coaches milestone win. With the second win of the double header, Coach Jones is now at 401 wins in his career at NMHU. The Cowboys are now 21-6 on the season and 11-3 in RMAC play. The Cowboys still sit atop the RMAC in first place after their series win over UNK.

With their series win over UNK, the Cowboys continue to climb in the polls. The Cowboys are now 16th in the PING! Baseball Top 30 from 30th in the last poll and the Cowboys have also moved up in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 poll to 15th from last polls ranking of 20th. The Cowboys are currently ranked 10th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Associations DII Poll as well as  ranked #1 in the NCAA Central Region Poll,

On the weekend the Cowboys racked up the extra base hits as they tallied eight doubles, one triple and five home runs. As a team the Cowboys ended the weekend with a .290 batting average.

Pitchers that earned wins for the Cowboys over the weekend include: Drew Vassil(7-1), David Saiz (2-1) and Danny Brown(2-0). Vassil earned his seventh win of the season with an eight inning performance. Vassil allowed just eight hits and four earned runs for the win and recorded three strike outs in his performance. Saiz earned his second win of the season with a one and two-third inning performance. Saiz allowed two hits and two earned runs in his appearance and recorded one strike out. Drown earned his second win of the season with a complete game seven inning outing. Brown allowed seven hits and two earned runs while recording four strikeouts in his seven innings pitched.

Outstanding players for the Cowboys were: Jason Carr and Kyle Gutchewsky. Carr finished the weekend going 8 -17 with 11 RBI's, six runs scored, one double and a career high five homeruns on the weekend. Gutchewsky 7-13 with four RBI's, five runs scored and two doubles.

The Cowboys will take the diamond again on 4/1 when they host the OreDiggers from the Colorado School of Mines for a four game RMAC series.
