LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands football team looks to make it three wins in a row when they host a winless - but dangerous - Adams State squad 12 p.m. Saturday at Sanchez Family Stadium.
NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS HEADING INTO THIS WEEK | 2021 STATS
The Cowboys put together a strong defensive effort and pulled away in the second half for a 24-10 victory on the road against Black Hills State last week. NMHU held the Yellow Jackets to 362 yards of offense and got two key second-half interceptions from Malik Brown (to go along with his team-high nine tackles) to put the game away after scoring the final 14 points of the game in the second half. Ramone Atkins again shined, throwing for 264 yards and three scores while rushing for another 99. Quavon Beckford had a big game with seven receptions for 125 yards and two scores.
On the season, the Cowboys rank 17th in the nation and No. 2 in the RMAC in total offense at 454.2 yards per game - led by Atkins who leads the nation in total offense at 350.4 yards per game. He's 15th in the nation in passing yards (2,266),13th in passing touchdowns (21) and 12th in completions per game (23.5). Atkins also leads the team in rushing yards with 533. Cameron High is second on the team in rushing with 413 at 5.0 yards per carry.
CJ Sims continues to leads the team in receiving with 48 catches (6.0 per game - 23rd in the nation) for 790 yards (10th in the nation) and seven touchdowns (28th in the nation). Beckford is second with 29 receptions for 415 yards and six touchdowns.
Defensively, Devin Coney leads the team with 46 tackles while Brown is second with 42 tackles to go along with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and eight pass breakups. Raymond Wingate leads the Cowboys with 3.0 sacks to go along with his 24 tackles and team-best 9.0 tackles for a loss.
ADAMS STATE HEADING INTO THE WEEK | 2021 STATS
The Grizzlies came off another tough loss last week, falling at CSU Pueblo 35-28 in a contest where the score was tied 7-7, 14-14 and 21-21 before two CSUP scores made it 35-21 in the third quarter - only to see ASU cut it to a one-score game early in the fourth but could never find the tying score. Bradley Smith threw for 311 yards and three scores with Elijah Harper catching five passes for 114 yards and two scores (five players caught fie passes apiece).
Four of the Grizzlies' eight losses this season have been by 10 points or less.
Smith is one of four quarterbacks the Grizzlies have used (with each throwing at least 43 passes) as he's thrown for 495 yards, six touchdowns and one interception on 39-for-62 passing (62.9 percent). Tyreik Campbell leads the team in rushing with 513 yards and four scores. Ian Fryday has a team-best 29 catches for 411 yards and three scores while Harper has 28 catches for 374 yards and six touchdowns.
Defensively, A'brae Booker-Currin leads the team with 80 tackles while Braeden Meyer has 57. Bryce Hampton has a team and RMAC-best six interception - including two returned for touchdowns. Angelo Martinez leads the team with 2.5 sacks.
